Am I cheating by only working 20-25 hours weekly but getting paid for 40? I've been doing software engineering at a big company on the east coast for a few years now. 100% remote. I have to be on the phone 1-3 hours a day. But I only get like 1-2 calls a day. Maybe. 99% of my tickets are from Jira. Management expects each team member to do about 80 tickets a month on average, be on the phones for X amount of time.

I average about 200-250 tickets a month. Which is about 20-30% above the average person at my company. Lowest tickets counts are around 50. And highest is around 400 My daily schedule: Clock in 7am. 7-9am. Bathroom break plus personal time. Checking in the seldom instant messages if any. 9-10am. Get on phone queue and start working on the tasks/tickets assigned to me 10-11. Work on tickets. Hyper focused. Multi tasking my own tickets and taking tickets off the general queue. Finish about 3-7 tic

11-12. One hour average of daily meetings. I usually shower in these useless meetings. 12-1. Lunch. Even though I already ate while answering emails/tickets. I usually use this for a nap time. AA 1-2. Back on phones (while not taking calls usually) and more personal time. 3-4. Still on phones. Hyper focused on tickets and close out 5+ more.

My company focuses on metrics and goals instead of micromanaging how I spend my time. I am still outperforming the average employee here by about 20- 25% and have got nothing but praises/raises/promotion in my reviews. My gf thinks I'm cheating. And that If I have free time that I'm being paid for that I should look for more work to do. Which I could if I wanted to. But that doesn't change my $40 an hour wage. I am considered an "A" player because I'm smart, have experience, and know how to effi

Other peers take days to even respond to some of their tickets. I have the one of the fastest first response times, lowest amount of return tickets, and still average over double the expected tickets completed a month. So am I cheating by not utilizing those extra 15 hours a week for work even if my metrics are above average? There is literally 0 incentive to go 110%. Side note: The average difficulty of tickets are around the same. Although I usually take the harder ones because of my knowledge

TLDR: Is it cheating to only work 25/40 hour of the week but get paid the full 40 even though my metrics are in the top 20% of my peers?

BridgetBardOh . 8 hr. ago Get a new gf. But seriously, you are getting the job done, are exceeding expectations. That you can do it faster than most, better than most, is a plus, not a "cheat." You are available 40 hours a week. You do more work in a week than your peers. You're not "cheating." And $40/hr is hardly a princely sum. You are achieving that elusive work/life balance. gf sounds like a Puritan.

Contributing_Factor 6 hr. ago • The reason the company tracks your work using actual output rather than time is not an accident. Some people can go 120% for a few hours, while others work long days at 75% output. As long as your employer is happy, your contract is between you and them. Your girlfriend's opinion isn't part of that equation.

LesserValkyrie .5 hr. ago are you working for your gf's company or something? is she majority shareholder? lol if my beloved one worked 2 hours paid 8 hours (and enjoyed it ofc) she'd be my queen lol dafuk for a mindset is that? it's toxic ofc it's not cheating, it's only justice for the other poorer souls

    • GME_alt_Center · 5 hr. ago If you can do in 5 hours what takes others 8, that should be your reward. Usually the reward is just more work.

SheiB123 5 hr. ago You are meeting all metrics so you are doing the job for which you are being paid. I would get bored but that is just me. You are earning your salary by meeting all metrics AND helping others. You owe them nothing more Your gf is just jealous.

FedRishFlueBish 6 hr. ago • You don't make the metrics, they do. They are telling you exactly what they want from you for your 40 hours, and they have decided that meeting those metrics is worth X dollars salary. You can continue doing what you are doing, guilt-free. However, if you want to get ahead in the company and advance your career, you should use that time to do more, or network, or try to improve the processes. Totally up to you, both are valid.

pukemon 3 hr. ago What I have learned is to never tell your spouse or partner that your work is super easy. They will always hold it against you for some reason. I don't know why.

oneharmlesskitty. 5 hr. ago This is a mental work and you need the naps and times off the screen, so you can focus later on being so efficient. This is not an assembly line, but intellectual work and you need to clean up mental capacity to be good and efficient. Others don't take breaks, are always exhausted and they solve less tickets and probably worse, as their brains are too tired to work efficiently.

ziggy029 5 hr. ago. edited 5 hr. ago If you are salaried, don't sweat it. If you weren't getting the job done in 40 (to their satisfaction), they'd make you work 50-60 to get there (and still pay you for 40). Salaried employment works both ways. You are paid for the job you do, not by how many hours. you have worked, and the pay is usually* (in theory) based on expecting the work to take 40 hours. But if you do the same amount (and quality) of work in 25 hours that someone

else may need 40-50 to do, no - - if they are not satisfied with the quality/quantity of your work, it's on them to tell you. Put another way -- you are not cheating any more than employers expecting salaried employees to work 50-60 hours to get the work done if need be (and paying them for only 40) are cheating.

ricksebak 4 hr. ago • One hour average of daily meetings. I usually shower in these useless meetings. Showering during a meeting?! This is an insanely dangerous game. Do you actually bring the laptop into the bathroom with you? Have you ever been called on and have to unmute yourself mid-shower? I'm not hating or anything, this is just a way bigger gangster move than I was expecting.
